Numerical and Visual Representations of Uncertainty Lead to Different Patterns of Decision Making

graphic: decision making

Although visualizations are a useful tool for helping people to understand information, they can also have unintended effects on human cognition.  The experiments presented in this article reinforce the idea that design choices are not neutral: seemingly minor differences in how information is represented can have important impacts on human risk perception and decision making.

Automating Recovery in Mixed Operation Technology/IT Critical Infrastructures
This article presents various concepts for automated backup, recovery, and configuration management, evaluating these concepts for real-world use and identifying limits for application to operational technology systems.

2

Cross Domain Lifelong Learning Based on Task Similarity 🔐
Humans gradually learn a sequence of cross-domain tasks and seldom experience catastrophic forgetting. In contrast, deep neural networks achieve good performance only in specific tasks within a single domain. To equip the network with lifelong learning capabilities, this article proposes a Cross-Domain Lifelong Learning framework that fully explores task similarities.

3

VisDict: Improving Communication Via a Visual Dictionary in a Science Gateway
Effective communication is vital for academic project success. Misunderstandings can arise from differing interpretations of terms, which may go unnoticed. VisDict aims to bridge this gap by creating a visual dictionary within a science gateway to facilitate clear communication between workflow providers and domain researchers.

4

Leverage Biology to Learn Rapidly From Mistakes Without Feeling Like a Failure
Our biology affects how we interact with the world, including how we learn new knowledge and respond to challenges. This article explores the impact of neurochemicals in our brain on learning and explains how to leverage our biology to improve education and problem solving, focusing on computing education.

Early AI in Britain: Turing et al.
This article presents an overview of Turing's early contributions to machine intelligence, together with a summary of his influence on other early practitioners

6

Dealing With Data Challenges When Delivering Data-Intensive Software Solutions 🔐
The predicted increase in demand for data-intensive solution development is driving the need for software, data, and domain experts to effectively collaborate in multi-disciplinary data-intensive software teams (MDSTs). This article conducted a socio-technical grounded theory study through interviews with 24 practitioners in MDSTs to better understand the challenges these teams face when delivering data-intensive software solutions.

7

Accelerating Finite Field Arithmetic for Homomorphic Encryption on GPUs
Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a rapidly developing technology that enables computation directly on encrypted data, making it a compelling solution for security in cloud-based systems. This article discusses methods to accelerate polynomial multiplication with GPUs, with the goal of making FHE practical.

8

History of the CAL Timesharing System
The CAL Timesharing System (CAL TSS) was developed at the University of California at Berkeley between 1968 and 1971 to provide interactive computing for research and instruction. This article discusses the origin of the project, development of the software, and the brief experience using the system before it was shut down in May 1972.
